Plan to Protect Historic Endurance Shipwreck in Antarctica

In brief
Conservationists want to create a protected area around Ernest Shackleton's ship, Endurance, in Antarctica. This is to safeguard the well-preserved wreck from climate change and potential damage from new species or increased exploration.
Conservationists are working to protect the historic shipwreck of Ernest Shackleton's ship, Endurance. This famous vessel sank in Antarctica's Weddell Sea in 1915 and was discovered in 2022.
For over a century, the ship remained remarkably intact due to the very cold and harsh conditions. However, experts now worry that a warming climate could make the wreck more accessible to ships and new species that might cause damage.
To keep the wreck safe, a group called the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust has suggested creating a special underwater protected area. This idea was recently supported at a meeting in Japan.
The proposal still needs final approval from a larger international group, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, which meets in September. If approved, strict rules would limit who can enter the area around the ship.
Scientists have even found what might be a new type of wood-eating creature living on the wreck. Protecting the Endurance would help preserve this unique site for future study and generations.
