An investment fund called Rebalance Earth is providing significant funding for a large nature restoration project at Broughton Sanctuary in North Yorkshire.
This support will help transform a large part of the estate, bringing it back to a more natural state.
The project will rewild about 700 hectares (around 1,730 acres) of land. This involves planting native trees and creating diverse habitats, which means felling some spruce trees to make way for local species.
Animals like Iron Age pigs and Dales ponies will also be introduced to fields where sheep once grazed. They will help break up compacted earth, allowing new grasses and plants to thrive naturally.
The Tempest family has owned Broughton for nearly 1,000 years, and the current owner, Roger Tempest, began nature recovery efforts in 2021. Already, 330,000 trees have been planted, and wildlife such as otters and beavers have returned to the area.
